Good technical infrastructure manned with the right skills and experience provide SPH Kundalila with a solid foundation from which to deliver projects reliably. “With our broad national footprint, we have built up a strong base in the north and south of the country to support our operations,” says SPH Kundalila group commercial and operations manager Graeme Campbell. “This includes financial, administrative, technical, mechanical, commercial and safety-related support functions based in North West and Western Cape provinces.” On the technical side, there are large, well-ventilated workshop facilities at major sites where long term contracts are underway, and an extensive rebuild facility at the headquarters in Potchefstroom. This allows the company to conduct much of its mechanical work in-house, including work on the engines and transmissions of its earthmoving vehicles. Recent rebuilds have included a 67-tonne crusher, a Cat 996 front end loader and two large bulldozers. At Saldanha, the workshop facilities also include its own spray booth for the coating of repaired equipment and componentry, to prevent undue corrosion from operating in coastal conditions. Every workshop has a wash bay with oil trap to ensure that no oil finds its way into the natural environment. Used oil is collected regularly by certified service providers and disposed of in line with strict environmental regulations. SPH Kundalila’s mine site operational facilities often include air-conditioned container offices where a range of functions can be conducted – from planning and administration to training and meetings.
